Reinventing Objects As Something New

Reinventing Objects As Something New

In our Global Issues and Entrepreneurship class, we have been discussing innovation. This week we were focusing on how innovations are often not a new invention but taking something that already exists and changing the use for it. Today it is Uber redefining the taxi industry. A few generations ago, it was World War II bomb factories converting their nitrate production into the fertilizer industry. A big part of the spirit of innovation is seeing something new in something that already exists. We gave students common objects from our home and asked them to come up with new uses for them. They came up with ideas such as: using a dog kennel as a crab trap, using an air pump for a mirror or art work, using an aluminium can to make popcorn, using Play-Doh as ear plugs and many more great student-generated ideas.
