Expressing who we are
In Grade 10 Language Acquisition Chinese, our first unit was Expressing Who We Are. Students explored the concepts of how a person’s cultural identity and sense of belonging may derive from connections to family, language context, ethnicity and social backgrounds.
In order to explore the concept deeper, the students designed questionnaires for interviews. In the interviews, the students found out how other people think about their own national identity, what impressions other people have about the students’ national identity, what people think of when their country were mentioned, and stereotypes associated with their nationality. More importantly, the students practised their oral communication skills by presenting their findings with Power Point.
